Practical guide

01

Hotel and private-stay rules

Hotels check the passport and submit accommodation information. For homes, rentals and stays with friends, registration should be completed with the local public-security authority within 24 hours of arrival.

  • Present a valid passport at check-in
  • Confirm the property can register foreign guests
  • Keep the registration record
  • Recheck requirements after changing a private address

The 2026 online-registration pilot

From 20 March 2026, the NIA began piloting online non-hotel registration in seven provincial-level regions including Zhejiang. For the first registration at an address, ask a host who knows the address details to help. Shanghai and Jiangsu travellers should still follow local instructions.

  • Use the official NIA platform or 12367 channels
  • Online registration has the same legal effect as on-site registration
  • Check whether the Zhejiang address is covered
  • Call 12367 or contact the local police station if unsure
