Practical guide
Set up mobile payment before departure
Eligible overseas cards can be linked to Alipay or Weixin Pay. Complete identity checks and make a small test payment where possible.
- Keep access to your registration phone number
- Match cardholder and passport names
- Allow overseas online transactions with your bank
- Read the fee and limit shown before a large payment
Keep cards and cash as backups
Ask whether international cards are accepted when UnionPay, Visa or Mastercard logos are displayed. ATMs with the matching logo may dispense RMB, subject to transaction limits and issuer fees. RMB cash remains legal tender.
- Carry two cards from different issuers
- Tell your bank your travel dates
- Save issuer and wallet support numbers
- Keep modest cash for small or offline purchases
Optional e-CNY and service help
Official guidance explains how overseas phone numbers and eligible cards can be used with an e-CNY wallet. Major airports also offer payment and currency-exchange support.
- Download apps only from official stores
- Never share payment codes or verification codes
- Shanghai 12345 and UnionPay 95516 can provide help
- Resolve wallet balances and pending refunds before departure
